چکیده

Two numerical simulations were performed to study the ability of a high-resolution mesoscale model to predict the track and structure of Hurricane Isabel over North Carolina. One simulation (Control) used standard NCEP climatologically-based sea surface temperature (SST) data for the lower boundary condition while another simulation (Experimental) prescribed real-time high-resolution SST data for the lower boundary. Results from this study show that both simulations predict the track of Isabel over North Carolina reasonably well, although the track predicted by the experimental simulation agrees more closely with observations. The experimental simulation more closely agrees with observations of the intensity of Isabel and the amount and spatial distribution of precipitation. These results reinforce the importance of accurate high-resolution SST data on numerical simulations of tropical cyclones.

Simulation of Hurricane Isabel Using the Advanced Circulation Model (ADCIRC)

Hurricane Isabel made landfall near Drum Inlet, about 240 km south of the Chesapeake Bay mouth, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina at 1700 UTC (GMT 12:00), September 18, 2003. Hurricane Isabel is considered to be one of the most significant tropical cyclones to affect portions of northeastern North Carolina and eastcentral Virginia. The ADvanced CIRCulation Model (ADCIRC) model was applied to...

Multi-Output Artificial Neural Network for Storm Surge Prediction in North Carolina

During hurricane seasons, emergency managers and other decision makers need accurate and ‘on-time’ information on potential storm surge impacts. Fully dynamical computer models, such as the ADCIRC tide, storm surge, and wind-wave model take several hours to complete a forecast when configured at high spatial resolution. Additionally, statically meaningful ensembles of high-resolution models (ne...

Hydrologic Modeling A SIMULATION OF THE HURRICANE CHARLEY STORM SURGE AND ITS BREACH OF NORTH CAPTIVA ISLAND

A high resolution, three-dimensional numerical circulation model with flooding and drying capabilities is used to simulate the Hurricane Charley storm surge in the Charlotte Harbor vicinity. The model-simulated surge is in sufficiently good agreement with observations at four stations for which data exist to allow us to use the model to explain the surge evolution and to account for the inlet b...

Numerical and Synoptic Study of Emission, Transport and Identify Potential Sources of a Severe Dust Storm Over Middle East

One of the powerful tools in dust storms analysis that have recently found extensive application is atmospheric-chemistry numerical modeling. Spatial and temporal distribution of Middle Eastern dust for a severe dust event during 4-8 July 2009 was analyzed by Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry (WRF/Chem) model simulations and remote sensing observations. The HYSPLIT model is applie...

Mesovortices in Hurricane Isabel

n 12 September 2003, satellite images of Atlantic Hurricane Isabel astounded the tropical cyclone science community as a myriad of elaborate patterns revealed themselves within the clouds in Isabel’s eye. Patterns of convoluted clouds in hurricane eyes have been previously documented (Fletcher et al. 1961; Kossin et al. 2002; Montgomery et al. 2002), but Isabel showed us something new. As the f...
